MISSION STATEMENT

The Center for International Understanding, Inc. (CIU), a 501 (c)(3) non-profit, non-partisan entity, engages Appalachia in US foreign policy initiatives of peace and capacity building for emerging democracies and market economies. Working with US federal agencies such as the US Agency for International Development (USAID), US Department of State (DOS), and Open World Leadership Development Center (OWLDC), the CIU

1. promotes peace initiatives through educational, professional, and business exchanges and through activities that sustain sister city relations between Princeton , West Virginia and Yoshkar Ola , Russia ,  sister state relations between West Virginia - Komi Republic , Russia , and sister city relations between Bluefield , West Virginia , and Tsalenjikha, Republic of Georgia ; and,

2. fosters information exchange between US and international entrepreneurs and private- public-, and NGO-sectors such as: accounting and auditing reform; agribusiness and agricultural economics; arts and culture; budget formulation; business development; corporate governance; democratic institution building; democratic policing; economic restructuring; educational reform; elections; energy and mining; environmental preservation issues; forestry and forestry-related industries; historic and cultural preservation; housing, public and private; infrastructure development and maintenance; library and information services; local and regional accountable governance, including federalism; public and private housing; print, broadcast, and electronic  media; private voluntary organization development; rule of law; rural/public health; rule of law; social services delivery; tourism and hospitality development and management (eco-, agri, and geo- tourism); telecommunications; women’s leadership development; youth issues/leadership development/advocacy.

WHAT WE DO

CIU Activities: The CIU achieves its goals by implementing the following federally funded activities:

A.  USAID’s Community Connections Program: US-based programs with home stays for international entrepreneurs and private- public-, and NGO-sector professionals from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine.

B.  Open World Leadership Development Programs: US-based programs, with home stays, for Russian, Ukrainian, Georgian, Azeri, and Moldovan entrepreneurs and private- public-, and NGO-sector professionals.

C.  USAID Technical assistance training programs in the USA and abroad: US-based and in-country technical assistance training programs on topics listed above for international entrepreneurs and private- public-, and NGO-sector professionals from fledgling democracies and emerging market economies.

D.   US Department of State’s International Visitors Programs: US-based programs on topics listed above for international entrepreneurs and private- public-, and NGO-sector professionals from fledgling democracies and emerging market economies.

E.   Sister City Relations between Princeton, West Virginia and Yoshkar Ola, Republic of Mari El, Russia: The CIU, in collaboration with the Office of Yoshkar Ola-Princeton Sister City Relations  sustains relations through activities such as: Student and teacher exchanges between Mikhail Lomonosov Lyceum in Yoshkar Ola and Princeton Senior High School; Exchanges between city governments, city hospitals, and chambers of commerce; Micro-financing of selected CC Alumni’s businesses; Technology hardware provided to CC Alumni; Reform of higher education; Destination tourism and hospitality development; Small business development (dialog between chambers of commerce); Methane gas exploration and harnessing for domestic use and export; Collaborative grant proposal development; Information exchange between city halls.

F.   Sister State Relations between West Virginia - Komi Republic, Russia: The CIU, in collaboration with the Office of West Virginia-Komi Sister State Relations  sustains activities such as: Komi Kids Yarn Project initiated by CIU Tourism and Hospitality Trainer Sandra Bennett who sends yarn and knitting/crocheting accessories gathered worldwide to Children’s Home in Syktyvkar; Student and teacher exchange activities between Ezhwa Gymnasium and Sissonville High School, Sissonville, West Virginia; Consulting for reform of Komi’s higher education; Training for destination tourism and hospitality development in Komi; Training Small business development (dialog between chambers of commerce); Consulting for methane gas exploration and harnessing for domestic use and export; Collaborative grant proposal development.

G. Sister city relations between Bluefield , West Virginia , and Tsalenjikha, Republic of Georgia : A result of the visit to West Virginia by Georgian local government administrators in June 2007, discussions are still underway about mutually beneficial collaborative projects.

H. Visiting Professorships: Registered in 2006, Director Karen Galstyan is designing in-country activities in collaboration with the CIU. Areas of emphasis: training for NGO Development and management, public-private partnerships, small and medium enterprises development, micro-enterprise and tourism development, and visiting professorships

I. Scholarships: The CIU raises cost share funds and scholarships for local college students to study abroad and for international students to study at local colleges through occasional fund raiser dinners. Tax deductible contributions to support the scholarship program are also encouraged.
